now or later it's still a loser for the President?

~a loser now because his base is up in arms and calling for him to be defied at best and primaried at worst, and the talking heads are jostling to outdo one another in taking umbrage

    or

~a loser later because the GOP won't agree to any of the sweeteners when they no longer have to, so we'll end up with both tax cuts for the rich AND no UI fixes or stimulus

    Any suggestions?

    •  That's one way of looking at it. (0+ / 0-)

I suspect it's not how the White House sees it. They seem to be relatively happy with fighting the base and getting the "deal" headline.

      •  except that passage looks problematic at best (0+ / 0-)

        --Dems lining up against it
--deMint, and his fellow baggers, also saying they won't agree to it

So the "headline" will just trumpet a major fail, no?  The upside is that the tax cuts for the rich will expire on the Dems watch.  The downside is that tax cuts for the rest of the country and also UI extension--however weak--will expire on the Dems watch.  The super-downside is that the tax cuts will be reinstated on the Repubs watch.  UI?  The suffering and homelessness that results will be blamed 100% on Obama.

        •  Well, yes. If it fails. (0+ / 0-)

But if it fails, then you deserve the "fail" headline.

My assumption is that they think it won't fail. Which is why they see it as a "deal." But deals don't fail.

        •  Isn't Obama innoculated against blame (0+ / 0-)

The suffering and homelessness that results will be blamed 100% on Obama.

He moved heaven and earth and pissed everyone off to get a deal.  If Congress doesn't pass it then he can't be blamed.

I am not saying this is why he did it, but it seems to be one result.

"YES WE CAN!." Barack Obama Update: Well, apparently we can't.

          •  Obama has never been inoculated against (0+ / 0-)

blame before.  He's been blamed for good things as well as bad.  If Congress passes this, he'll be blamed for it being a bad deal.  If Congress doesn't pass it, he'll be blamed for UI running out, and for taxes going up, and then for taxes for the wealthy going down when the GOP renews the tax cuts later.  If it gets fixed a bit by Dems in Congress and then passed, he'll be blamed for not holding out longer, or fighting harder, or standing up to the GOP, or not getting a better deal himself.

Right now he's being blamed for not taking this up before the election, even though he was trying to get Congress to act and talking about it every day before the election.  He's being blamed for campaigning around the country instead of staying and holding Congress' feet to the fire.  (Alternate blame: he should have gotten out of the DC bubble).  If he gives a speech about it, he'll be blamed for giving "pretty speeches" and if he doesn't give a speech he'll blamed for "not using the bully pulpit."

This is a bad deal, no matter how it ends up.  But if it fails I don't think he'll ever be inoculated against blame--on this or any issue.
