Below is my idea for a Dem. position/deal that I floated in my diary yesterday that I am once again trotting out for your consideration.  Here it is in a nutshell version:

The most important thing we need to get out of any "DEAL", which is what we don't get out of the current deal, is to separate the middle and upper class tax cuts.  If we don't we will only repeat the hostage taking episode again, and probably cave to another extension again.

The Line-In-The-Sand should be the permanent extension of the current tax rates for under $250,000.  Give the Republicans some temporary extension for the upper bracket, but stand firm on the permanency of the extension for the under $250,000 crowd.

If you take this stand you can put the Republicans in the position of trying to take a PERMANENT tax cut for the middle class (which is the current bill) and making it a short TEMPORARY middle class tax cut extension.  Portray it as the Republicans wanting to raise your taxes in two years while we Democrats want to keep them at present levels forever.  Let them try to defend THAT!

I still think its worthy for consideration.  Even if the Republicans block it in the Senate, at least we will be seen as going down fitting for permanent middle class tax cut.
