    We have squirrels and birds and they don't mess with sunflowers. Just go for it, unless you don't like them. They'll naturalize in some areas, too.

      We grow a lot in my state (Colorado) and I used to love driving by a field of sunflowers.  It just made me happy!

        you could really really help out the bees with some asters and other blue/purple wildflowers, as I alluded to below. Sunflowers aren't a native flower in my area, but they are useful in agriculture.
