  •  Thanks. Good points... (0+ / 0-)

I agree that in a four-way race (e.g. Sanders, Obama, Romney, and Palin), Sanders would actually have a decent chance to win, because there's probably 25% of the population that's liberal enough and frustrated enough with establishment politicians that they would vote for him. If all it takes is 25 to 30%, I think he could pull it out. He would get most of the young people, do very well in New England and the West Coast, and be competitive in the economically depressed Rust Belt if he focuses his campaign on economic issues.

Regarding the appellation "democratic socialist" or "social democrat," my feeling about it is that it's unlikely to significantly help or hurt Sanders, because conservatives have called Obama a socialist so many times that I suspect most people just tune it out now and it has lost its power as an epithet for the average American. Having said that, I would encourage Sen. Sanders to avoid using any labels to describe his political ideology. He should talk about his philosophy in terms of "fighting for the middle class" rather than with a traditional label. I think a lot of Americans are wanting to move beyond labels and therefore such an approach would resonate.

I'm pleased to see that nearly 200 people have already signed the petition. This is significantly better than I expected after just one day. If the support keeps growing, I think the next step would be to create a list of who's willing to volunteer in each Congressional district. Eventually we could present a list to Sen. Sanders showing that he would have at least one volunteer in each district across America should he choose to run.

I called up his Senate office today and told them that a Draft Sanders for President petition is underway. The staffer I talked to sounded happy to hear that.
