I agree that he is as much anti-hero as hero.
That's what makes the film appealing and adult instead of sugar-coated treacle.

I can identify with the broken dreams meet duty meet trying to cope theme.

is a selfish jerk and is not kind to his wife and his family even as he is generous to others (then resentful of it). The revelation that without him Mary would be a spinster librarian is deeply offensive. Thank you George Bailey for saving her from a life as a single, working woman. Bah.

It isn't that it is a bad film or George is an uninteresting tortured man, it is that people see Jimmy Stewart and they become uncritical of his character. Most people don't think George Bailey is a self-centered jerk. I don't see it as an inspirational Christmas movie of redemption.

      •  Actually Jimmy Stewart was really, really good at (0+ / 0-)

... playing people with a disturbingly dark streak.  (Look at Vertigo.)  I think that's why people can relate to him so much as a "common man"-type character.

In real life, who hasn't had flashes and moments of some of the same dark, irrational impulses of selfishness, anger and hatred toward the people you love most (because they are the people you love most), obsession, feeling trapped ... etc?
