.....and as someone who is not a Verdi fan at all, I was very, very impressed with this performance and practically everyone in it.  Of course, having Simon Keenlyside, who is 'The Man' when it comes to interpreting Rodrigo, if one believes the critics and audiences, helps.

I actually got a kick out of the fact that the cameras caught Sir Simon and also his wife Magdalena Kožená in a box before the performance.  YNS just recently made his first guest-conducting gig with the Berlin Phil (Rattle's orchestra in Berlin, for those reading DM's diary not in the know).  Given that YNS is from the next generation after Rattle, I think that Rattle can afford to take a mentorly attitude towards him.

Sir Simon and I were born within six months of each other-- he 1/19/55 and I 7/20/54.

      •  parallel with Rattle, sort of (0+ / 0-)

YNS cut hit teeth orchestrally with the Orchestre Métropolitain of Montreal, having been their music director since 2000.  Rattle did the same thing with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a somewhat "out of the way" orchestra, to build up experience.

at the Philadelphia Orchestra.  Sir Simon, rumor has it, has a standing offer to be music director, but has never been interested in conducting full-time (not that jet setting conductors work "full time" in any one place) in the states.  Saw Rattle with the Philadelphia Orchestra last year doing Damnation of Faust, with a friend of mine in the chorus.

      •  in fact, 'the fabulous Philadelphians' are the... (0+ / 0-)

....only American orchestra that Rattle conducts now.  He was principal guest with the LA Phil in the 1980's, I think.  But obviously Rattle is able to do anything he wants, whenever he wants.  I think Philly semi-desperately tried to get Rattle in the late 1990's for after Wolfgang Sawallisch, but obviously Berlin beat Philly to the punch there.  Clearly, when YNS takes over, he'll keep Rattle on as a welcome guest whenever the latter's schedule permits.
