Actually, I live in San Francisco, though I'm in Charlotte, NC this weekend.

But the only opera I saw this season was Makropulos. A dear friend of mine saw the Cyrano and raved about it.

As for Věc Makropulos, it was the second time I have seen this work, the first was also in SF in the early 90's. I thought it was a fine performance, but it didn't quite achieve the Janáčekian fever that is what I most prize about the composer. I couldn't quite put my finger on it until just last weekend when I heard Pierre Boulez conducting the Chicago Symphony in Janáček's Glagolitic Mass. Here's what I wrote to a friend the following day:

The second half was a true Janáčekian feast. I had picked up a copy of Rattle's recording to get the work in my ear a bit. This was much better than that. It's hard to characterize it except to say that it was grounded and those static and repetitive gestures take on an ecstatic quality. And it reminded me why I care about Janáček, which I didn't quite get from the Makropulos last month.

As for Mattila, she's a bit of a puzzle to me. She sang Elsa that year that the Opera had to leave the Opera House for seismic upgrading and I thought it was by far the finest reading of that role I've ever heard. But the spark has so far not returned between me and her. She sang Káťa Kabanová for us a few years ago, but of the four singers I've heard do that role live (the others being Silja, Secunde and Beňačková) she was the least interesting.

I still hold her in high regard, but I'm rather temperate of my expectations when I go to hear her.
