        If President Barack Obama wants to hire an ambassador to mend White House relations with American business, Roger Altman would be an odd choice, top business officials say.

        Nevertheless, administration officials said Wednesday that Altman, an investment banker and former deputy treasury secretary, is among several candidates to replace Larry Summers as director of the White House’s National Economic Council, which coordinates economic policy for the president.
