    The idea that instead of trying to fight evil, one just walks away from it into something else, something utterly mysterious and unpredictable, is an incredibly powerful literary theme. It's like you make your own reality, it goes with you.

    And of course it's all about scapegoating, too. The USA is a terrible scapegoater. And the people we punish all of course deserve it....how did the USA become so mythic? This country so lends itself to these analogies.

    Are other countries like this? Is it all just an excuse to ignore inexcusable national behavior?
