  •  The Schumer proposal... (10+ / 0-)

was and remains completely different than the Obama/Republican one.  It targeted longterm unemployed and was designed to make the soc. sec. "holiday" a direct method to get people working again.  (The holiday only applied to the employer's contribution to soc. sec.)

The Obama/Republican holiday is apparently a permanent move to change the funding of soc. sec. to the general fund.  That is a radical change, not tied to job creation, and is designed much like the Shrub tax rebates that were not at all stimulative in the longterm for our economy.

...for releasing another weasel word into the wild to chew up people's capacity for reason.

"apparently" doesn't cut it.  I means by appearances.  Appearances are deceptive, and an appeal to them is not necessary if you have the facts.

And you don't.  Obama's deal has that holiday as a temporary one.  It's only been inferred by some to be permanent, owing to an argument that Obama and the others aren't going to be able to argue to keep it temporary.  It's crystallized ideological panic, rather than valid, sound logic.

Additionally, what many people are forgetting are the deflationary conditions.  if the average person, whose taxes Obama is keeping low, suffers a tax hike, it has an effect on aggregate Demand.  It's not so much a choice to actively generate jobs, as much as one to avoid unnecessary austerity that might undermine the economy when it's least tolerable.

Austerity has its time, and that time is not yet now.

Do you honestly believe that going into an election year in 2012 this withholding "holiday" won't be extended?

It's bad for social security funding and it is permanent despite the lies the WH seems bent on promulgating for this ill-conceived and completely surprising attack on social security.
