  •  I was Air Force JO (11+ / 0-)

During Vietnam. I echo all you said, and more. Beyond "taking care of your people" is leading from the front, as several comments mention.

As a young Lieutenant I was lucky to have as my right hand man a superior Chief Master Sergent who was about the smartest manager I knew, and in his free time he was a baptist minister! His was a lead by example method; So if a crew needed to be dispatched to meet an aircraft bringing in sensitive cargo requiring security police guards in the middle of the night, one of us would always show up. Not to do anything or direct anything, the crew chiefs knew what  to do. But we were there to show that if they had to get up in the middle of the night in cold weather, leadership would too.

I learned  lots of little tips that helped clarify who needed to do what. The Crew Chiefs and airmen did the work, the NCOs trained them, the CMSGT kept the line NCOs sharp, and my job was to know what was going on, keep them supplied with the tools they needed, and keep upper management (field grade and up) off their back so they could do their job. Finally as a squadron commander I could pass what I knew along to the young lieutenants who worked for me, So what I learned from the CMSGT trickled on down.

So in the end it was team building training.

I was drafted, But now my son, hearing all these stories, volunteered as an Army Special Forces Medic 18-D, an E4 when he could have gone to Officer's school easily. But getting in on the action is what he wants to do. And he's learning firsthand what a community the military is.

So, at his own level, he's "taking care of his people". It works up and down the chain of command.

Without geometry, life is pointless. And blues harmonica players suck.
