    have actually read "The Wealth of Nations". It is apparently not even required in economic classes any longer.

    I live in a very red, very uneducated state. I regularly travel between here and another even redder less educated state. One of the consequences of this (chronic depression aside) is that almost everybody I talk to IRL is a rabid Republican't. Most of these people are also very comfortable if not downright filthy rich.

    I have yet to get into this conversation with a single one that, while they love to spout how wonderful capitalism is and how it is the only way to make the world a better place, has ever read the book. Not one.

    Many have claimed to, but invariably when I start to talk about the specifics of the work, it has come out that they lied. Once this comes out and I start to inform them about things like what you've quoted, or about the premises Smith assumed and/or mentioned in his work, the topic drifts.
