    . . . although "screwed" is way too bleak to be accurate, and indicates a lack of familiarity with my state.  There are ways around the 2/3 tax rule (not that it doesn't need to be got rid of; of course it does), and they're doable when the governor and the state legislature are on the same page--as they will be, under Jerry Brown, for the first time in almost 30 years, except during the five years of Gray Davis.  And Davis did manage to raise revenues by passing a car tax, which the Acting Gubernator immediately rescinded.  And in local elections, when it's a tax for something like improved schools, it is possible to get a two-thirds vote to raise a tax--it's been done.

    But my main purpose in posting was just to counter the OP's implication that "going the way of California" is some sort of fate worse than death.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  My fondest wish for the rest of the nation--in fact I'll make it my 2010 Christmas wish for all Kossacks--is that someday you might get so lucky as to be "going the way of California."
