  •  people always used to mock me... (10+ / 0-)

...when I told them I was Red Cross certified life-saver 4 times in the Navy. As an explosives expert who daily supervised the handling, arming, de-arming of live bombs, missiles, and all sorts of things that go BOOM, certification was not an option-it was mandatory. Then one day, I had to actually use this skill to save my best friend's life, who had dropped dead in my apartment for no apparent reason. It took me 20 solid minutes of cpr to bring him back. Now nobody mocks me or makes makes jokes about "you know cpr, big deal, so what"?
In fact, most people try to at least act like they respect me (even when I know they don't), because they never know when the next ambulance siren they hear may be coming for them! And I'm going to do my very best to keep them alive until the pros get there!

My point: People like Senator Collins never appreciate the awesome responsibilities America's first responders face every single day. That is, until it is their life that's hanging by a thread and needs saving!

or Courtland Milloy, two gentlemen whose viewpoints I found so indistinguishable that I refer to them as CM. Some years ago, there was a debate raging about "the moral place of JROTC in a young person's life." CM even had a retired admiral weigh in (against JROTC), which CM felt was simply indoctrinating young black men to fight the white man's wars. I rolled my eyes and said, "Yeah, perish forfend a teenager should learn pride, teamwork, respect for authority, etc." CM seems to think that the armed forces are jackbooted thugs (I'm sure he had something pithy to say about the photo of the soldier who isn't actually pointing a gun at the wailing Elian Gonzales)...but let this country be attacked, and I'd bet a steak dinner that CM would be shrieking for the armed forces to protect him. And servicemen, black or white or anything in between, would put themselves in danger to shield him.

who knows cpr is a damned fool who has never done it.It is hard work-I have only  done it on the training doll, but I have seen it done real close up-on full codes at my nursing home.
first responders are awesone, for both the big things they do,& the small ones-like coming over to our house because my husband's aide was very late,he needed to go to bed, badly.I cld'nt transfer him myself-so I called the regular police number, they routed me to fire & rescue
I explained the situation & 10 minutes later a fire truck pulled up,four burly firemen hopped out & came in
& just picked Lou up & moved him to his bed.

      •  in my Navy days I was one of those... (4+ / 0-)

..."big burly men". In my twenties in '75, at 270 lbs and strong as a bull, I really was quite an imposing figure then. Now at 58 and 220 lbs maybe not so much. Yep, I've never forgotten any of my Army tanker, Navy or police training. It's all good. I learned all about true patriotism, love of country, respect for the law and people, honor, and of course saving lives-not just taking them, whether in self-defense or defending the nation I love with all my heart. That's something nobody can ever take away from you. That is unless they want to walk over my dead body to try and take it from me. So far, most people just take one look at my face(the face of one who has paid a lot of dues) and keep right on walking. Don't ask me why, maybe it's my finely-tuned "6th sense", but my greatest hope (and fear)in my bones today is that my own government won't test the training they gave me to defend myself from their potential tyranny, as I feel the specter of impending police state is coming very soon.

      •  We call that "patient assist-no transport". (4+ / 0-)

We do it all the time, in Emergency Services.
Where I live, volunteer fire fighters and EMTs do it for free.
Not that there aren't benefits: Getting your ass eaten by mosquitoes while manning a pumper in summer; standing waist deep in frigid ditch water on Christmas morning while removing an old couple from their wrecked car; facing off against an agitated crackhead who's disappointed that I didn't bring him morphine when he called with phony chest pain; attending to a mentally ill patient whose home smells like the basement of an outhouse; assuring a woman that her husband, suffering smoke inhalation, is being taken care of, but that her dog is dead.

I hope we'll see you at our next crab cake fundraising dinner!

my husband was so tired & in pain. They just came in,& lifted him swiftly & gently into bed, then one of them helped me move him up the bed.
I grew up in a small town during the 60s & 70s.My Father
& Uncle were both members of the volunteer fire department. Both of them were hospitalized for smoke inhalation twice.
Both our household had this thing called a plectron that sat on top of our fridges & went off when they were needed w/this high-pitched wail.
-(it was also tested every day at 6:45pm,to make sure it was working right)-
Belive me,we sent off a donation the next day.
