They've been doing this for a long time. They even upgraded their stores in 2008-09 because more upscale shoppers were shopping at Wal-Mart and they wanted to keep their business (as opposed to the business of less affluent long-time customers).

It's all a part of a single whole. For a long time, Wal-Mart has been operating under the illusion of lower prices, but not actual lower prices. Those lower prices were history long ago.

    •  And now their prices are going to be higher (2+ / 0-)

at Christmas time. All because they want their monthly statements to reflect well on their quarterly reports.

      Happy Holidays!

Wal-Mart made the decision some time ago to go for more upscale customers. Even the brands they carried changed. I remember reading about it and even taking my sister to the Wal-Mart here so she could see what they did to appeal to these more affluent folks.

But their prices weren't all that great anyway by the time they made that decision.

Seriously, it's all a part of a whole.

I think most people who don't have a lot of money to spare figured out some time ago to take their business elsewhere. Hell, shopping is cheaper! The newly impoverished will be in for a shock, but they just need to know no $$ is why The Great Thunder Beings invented Big Lots (where, on the right day, you really can get a deal, even on food) and similar places.

        •  No they didn't make this decision "some time ago" (0+ / 0-)

“In previous years Wal-Mart has come out and hammered everyone with unbelievably low toy prices,” said Eric Johnson, director of the Center for Digital Strategies at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. “They stepped away from that this year, and after Thanksgiving their prices have crept back up."

In other words, this has been going on for a long time now.

            •  Um.... This is about (0+ / 0-)

              FUCKING TOYS!!!!!

Not make-up or clothing or furniture and televisions.

This memo was specifically about raising the prices of toys for this season.

You can argue this as long and in as many way as you wish. It only makes you look like a Wal-Mart shill and a freemarketeer tool-bag.

When was the last time you priced one of this year's hottest toys, the Pillow Pets turtle, which, unlike most of the other Pillow Pets (which sell for ~$19), is selling for $35-$50?

Why do you think virtually every retailer---even eBay sellers---have the Pillow Pets turtle priced this high?

Why do you think Wal-Mart decided to shift its customer base to upscale customers?

Do you think Wal-Mart decided to shift its customer base out of the kindness of their hearts?

Or do you think they made a business decision in order to make more money?

Do you think that it's entirely coincidental that their prices have been rising for years now and, for some time now, have been little different than, say, Target's?

Do you think it's unprecedented for businesses to raise prices on everything, including toys, before Christmas? (see, for example, Pillow Pets above).

And, finally, do you think low-income families are so naive that they haven't already noticed how high Wal-Mart's prices are and started shopping elsewhere?

                •  Thanks for making my point. (0+ / 0-)

they are doing it to make more money. Just when they're about to get a massive tax cut  and the Walton family get a 20% cut in the estate tax.

                  At Christmas.

My whole point is that they're doing this at Christmas, when the shoppers with the least to spend and for the most part have no choice but Walmart are hurting and struggling to put food on the table, much less buy a Christmas present for their kids.

I guess profits trump everything, right?

Jesus. This is why America can't have nice things. Because people like you are willing to overlook an obvious predatory practice all in the name of "good business".

This country is fucked if "progressives" like yourself can't see the cold, calculations of a corporate behemoth doing whatever it pleases, whenever it pleases them.

Good luck to you and have a nice Christmas. Sounds to me you don't have anything to worry about.

The rest of us are on our own.

                  Fucking bean counter.
