personally are both filthy rich. One is a Canadian billionaire who owns a huge auto parts manufacturing business that employs over 6,000 people. When the auto industry took its big hit a few years back he had almost 10,000 employees and was looking at the prospect of having to pare down his company workforce to half and it was a conversation I will never forget. This uber rich man of 84 years broke down in tears literally, his concern was his workers, "they are all part of my big ass family, how do you tell your kids, your brothers and sisters you are taking away the food off of their table, taking away the table and the roof over it". He knew poverty, he was quick to explain that as a kid he literally did not have shoes to go to school in.
The other lives here in the states, a multi millionaire with a life long knack of smart small investments that panned out expotentionally. Oddly he is a Republican but oft leaves me wondering why he is. I have never met a rich Republican who has any concern, empathy, or compassion for those with little, he is that exception to the rule. But then again, he too, is self made, having come up poor. He is one of those who thinks that Obama is full of shit, that he does NOT need a tax break and that The GOP is disgusting for holding UI extensions hostage for tax breaks for people like himself. This man gives more money away than any one I have ever known- not for tax write offs, he could care a less about that, he cares about those he gives it to. Oddly, he leads a huge group of environmentalists that plant 1,000 trees a day in the northeast and is very active in trying to ban mountaintop removal mining practices.
I used to think all rich folks sucked until I met the two of them. I'll still say that most do suck but their are a few truly decent ones among them and I am proud to call these gentlemen friends, rich and or Republican didn't rob either of their decency or empathy for others- it is unfortunate that there are not thousands more like them.
