  •  Great News! One question: Can groups of these (5+ / 0-)

stations coordinate/share content?  Or otherwise work together?

Thousands of these stations presents an opportunity to generate a pretty big demographic footprint, and maybe more importantly to reach people that aren't being served the truth in more conservative districts.

Low Power to the People!!  :)

    Thanks for this.  Bookmarked.

    •  Add call letters to "Low Power to the People" (2+ / 0-)

It makes a neat bumber sticker.

Can station coordinate in real time

      if not

Does anything prevent them from playing a recording of, oh say, a Daily Kos show at different times of the day?

      •  Yes, they can... (4+ / 0-)

Current LPFM's tend to be religious stations that retransmit a national feed.

The big problem is that the stations themsleves have extremely short range.  You won't have much of a drive-time audience, for example, 'cos they will drive by your signal within a few minutes.

But they cannot enter into a program-supply or management agreement with a full-power radio station to rebroadcast that station's programming.  They also must be independently owned.

An independent entity that is not an FCC broadcast-station licensee itself certainly could act as the originator and provider of progressive programming to individual station licensees... a progressive network programming supplier.  There is nothing preventing that in the FCC's rules.

    •  That was my thought (3+ / 0-)

While I'm sure some left-wing radio might be nice I think what might REALLY make a difference is syndicated news.

Picture this, those who are dismayed by the low journalistic standards of US media band together to create a new news organisation. They produce an hourly bulletin (and possibly some in-depth stuff) that covers the news that the media generally ignores or distorts. It's not left or right, it's just proper journalism. What's really happening in the world. It would have a genuine international element, not just the latest war but the big stories happening all over the globe. Just that alone would be a massive leap forward. I don't envisage MSNBC radio, I envisage Al-Jazeera or BBC news radio. You don't need a LW station to win, just getting the truth out should be enough.

The problem would be funding. In many ways being non-commercial means that it can truly be independent but it'd have to take donations and perhaps charge stations who wish to rebroadcast. If the organisation could be funded they could be the news providers for thousands of these stations, while the stations themselves can focus on local issues the rest of the time.

      •  Agree. The other side of the story, so to speak. (1+ / 0-)

Funding could come through an Act Blue page or some internet funnel.

A lot of interesting possibilities with this expansion.

        •  I'm surprised no one has mentioned Democracy Now! (1+ / 0-)

Until 10 mins ago I didn't even know about Democracy Now! I'd heard the name but thought it was a website rather than exactly the thing I was advocating in my post! So basically that with perhaps a less of a focus on left wing issues (if that's the case, hard to tell in 5mins)
