Back in the late 1970's I worked at the MIT FM radio station (WTBS, later WMBR after we sold our call letters to Ted Turner...but that's another story).  The station was broadcasting at 20 watts but had a tall tower on an apartment building.  The station tower was located in Cambridge right near the Charles River, and the signal pretty much covered out to Route 128 and on a real good day you could hear us out to route 495.  So the range was easily 5 miles and often up to 15 miles.  Now a 100' tower restriction will reduce that range a bit, but 100 watts is quite a bit more power.
