The nation of immigrants is now one of the most immigrant unfriendly ones around.

    •  Partly, that's because the immigrants (0+ / 0-)

weren't "voluntary," in the sense that today's migrants from Central America are.  Euro-Americans were mainly misfits back in the old country and were "encouraged" to seek fame and fortune in the "land of milk and honey." Those that did, of course credited themselves. Those that didn't carried a chip on their shoulders that they passed on to their progeny.

The conservative mind relies mainly on what is plain to see.

Immigrants were almost always objects of derision and bigotry--and the present ones are kinda brownish.  Truth is--we are a bigoted nation.

Immigrants have come here for the same reasons since there have been immigrants, whether European or Central American.  Some came for economic opportunity, some fleeing persecution, some because of family reunification.

Same in the 19th century from Europe:  Liberals fled persecution after the collapse of the 1847 revolutions, immigrants came seeking land, people joined family members.  Jump ahead - refugees came from Central American wars, others came fleeing collapsing economies and poverty, others joined family members.

I'm not sure what all the BS about chips on the shoulders means.  I don't get your point at all, and something tells me that it's probably better to move on and not pay too much attention to it, because I smell a slightly foul odor eminating from it.
