Seems inevitable, sadly.  As the Greenland glaciers melt, cooling the northern portion sufficiently to shut down the loop, right?

So, the oil spill might be an irritant, but warming air is the culprit, is this right?

It's difficult to be happy knowing so many suffer. We must unite.

    •  That's my understanding. This is an artifact (8+ / 0-)

of global warming. It is not related to the oil spill.

However, I still tipped and rec'd the diary, because it has a lot of interesting weather alarmism.

I don't think anybody thinks the Gulf Stream is about to completely fail. If it does, England may be under ice while the rest of the globe keeps heating up.

I REALLY hope we don't have another winter like the last one.  In central Maryland, we had a nearly 30 inch snowfall on December 19th; then in early February we got more than SIXTY inches in FOUR days.

    •  I believe that underwater thermoclines (6+ / 0-)

are also warming, due to increased meltoff of Arctic and Greenland glacier melt and increased non-salt water added to northern Atlantic waters...

all of which, combined, are things that I've read can contribute to stopping the Gulf Stream heat pump which has historically kept the US east coast and northern Europe free of more severe winter weather for thousands of years.

Which makes our milder PacificNW weather the past couple of years (winter coats on for 4th of July fireworks at 10 pm with temp @ low 50s; mid-50s the whole month of December so far. Today, 54 F.) more understandable, in an odd way.

      Climate change is here.
