    consumer electronics have a) gotten "relatively cheaper" over time, compared to things like housing, education and medical care, which have gotten "relatively costlier" and b) rapidly depreciate in value. Thus possession of consumer electronics is a singularly bad marker of one's standard of living; one can easily own a computer, TV, video game system, cell phone, etc. and still not be able to afford necessities. And all those "luxuries", if sold at a yard sale, would probably fetch at most $50 total (most pawn shops, for example, won't even take a TV more than 5 years old).
