If we did work fewer hours with a livable wage and benefits it would lead to full employment which would be more sustainable for our current economy.  A civilized and fully flowering society is one where a large class of people have time for family, furthering of knowledge and for art.  Not only are people happier, but innovation and creativity would be encouraged that would actually contribute important things to the world.  Some "primitive" societies show that people can actually work very few hours per day to sustain themselves. Of course the number of hours we work today is so that a wealthy class can extract their portion from our labor and not contribute to the overall sustenance of the group.  The "rich create jobs" is a big lie, they just skim off the top.
