spouted a gem while we were lunching yesterday.  He's been a staunch Republican as long as I can remember (my mother remembers a day when he was very liberal, but that was before I was born, or something).

Anyway, he brought up unplugging appliances to save energy, which surprised me, and we exchanged a few lines before things went back to normal with his words:

"I never unplug my appliances.  There is so much oil in the earth to give us what we deserve - electricity."  (His emphasis.)

There's nothing he hates as much as environmentalists.

I've learned to just smile and nod, smile and nod.

that oil is used to produce electricity in very, very few instances.  Coal, and to a far lesser extent nuclear reactors and natural gas, is what "gives" us electricity.  Send him some pictures of mountain-top removal to extract coal and ranchers in Montana setting their water wells on fire thanks to fracking procedures to extract natural gas.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H. L. Mencken

Didn't you know that oil is produced abiogeniclycontinuously, from massive carbon deposits deep inside the Earth? There is apparently a big distillery down there that is just pumping out that sweet, sweet crude, 24/7. we never have to conserve! The Lord will provide!

This is the current "scientific" model that they are using. Thomas Gold is these guys' hero - he suggested there may be "at least 500 million years' worth of gas" trapped inside the Earth's crust. For more info, take a look at "The Deep Hot Biosphere" by Thomas Gold (forward by Freeman Dyson.)

Democracy *means* Anti-Plutocracy. Democrats, be true to your Self and win!
