You and I are on the same side here.  I'm not advocating banning IVF, I think it's a great idea.  I'm just reiterating the theme of the diary here, in saying hey, let's see the consitency.  Or let's point out the hypocrisy.

You might think that this is crass and not a nice thing to do, essentially trying to offer a bluff with a serious things like reproductive rights.  I can sympathize with that.  But I'm willing to bet that they won't call the bluff (or more importantly, their base won't!).  This is exactly the kind of wedging they've done with us on gay marriage, only I think it's more powerful because IVF is seen to be mainstream.  And I think it's time we resort to such tactics.

Regarding clinics, I respectfully disagree with you.  I am sure there are outstanding clinics out there, and yes you need to be a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist to practice, but all I'm saying is let's get rid of the secrecy and competition of these clinics.  Let's put out the accumulated know-how of culture conditions out in the peer-reviewed literature so that all clinics can have good outcomes.  When we talk about cancer treatment, we don't hide from our competitors what we're using to treat our patients do we?  Why should IVF be any different?  And if it takes the FDA or some other governmental agency to do that, then I'm all for it.

With BWS, yes there has been no formal link proven, but the data suggest that there is an increased relative risk (about 5).  Does that mean I should denounce IVF because of it, no, because the absolute risk of BWS is still low.  But it does suggest that something about IVF perturbs the developing embryo in some way.

Maybe I'm being naive in my willingness to risk such a beneficial technique, but I'm betting that the natural instinct to want biological children will trump the red anti-choice kool-aid these politicians are peddling.
