  •  atheists? (10+ / 0-)

Sure, we are openly mocked, the most despised minority in the US, and barred from public office in six states (or would be under local law but for the protections of the US constitution) and essentially ignored in every public occasion, motto, and statement, but we are also simply too few and too hidden to attract much active animus.

In a word, just as on the internet no one can tell you are a dog, in the real world there is no outward sign to see that someone is an atheist, and unless you go out of your way to say so, in many communities (I hesitate to say most), people would not know, and when people who know you personally find out, they shrug.

Yes, it was a fabulous moment to be acknowledged in Obama's inauguration, and more of that would be welcome, but for me personally, there are so many crushingly important issues that I would rather work on environmental justice, gay rights and economic justice issues first.  When the wars are ended, and civil rights restored, and racism really dispatched, and prosperity spread wide, then we can talk.

    just my two cents.

Too far left to be part of the base anymore.
