    Its an set of events that can be seen through many valid and legitimate perspectives.  An indictment of capitalism, another example of man's inhumanity to man, warning of the dangers of authoritarianism or a place to rethink the relationship between man and God.  Could a good just and loving God allow this?  

    For me, its a warning of the risks of authoritarianism and that no country regardless of how modern and sophisticated is immune to this opportunistic infection of the body politic.  That seems to be most often seen in declining great powers where the existing power is threatened by increasing demands for political power by the working class.  

    To me, the only thing that makes it unique in the entire bloody history of humanity is the industrial scale of it.  

    Some others concern me...

    The Russians are not exactly known for their following of the laws and customs of civilized warfare (see also Cossacks, Chechnya, etc).  The world's most infamous antisemitic forgery was a product of Imperial Russia.  

    Under capitalism man exploits man, under communism the roles are reversed.
