it will make things worse as I will now be mandated to buy useless health insurance with no price break to allow for the fact that a pre existing decreases my earnings potential.

I was lucky enough to study a lot of human physiology with a large molecular and cell biology component so that has done me pretty well along with buying meds from whichever country is cheaper.

I do go to the doctor's now and again but generally that is to request a specific test. As bad as this sounds my track record for self diagnosis is running way above that which I could expect from a GP.

So far so good but I've had to be really pro active, eat well and exercise. i.e. lots of prevention.

      1. Won't modified community rating require that the insurance company charge the same price as others the same age without a pre-existing condition? Why wouldn't this lead to a lower premium?
      1. Won't the actual decrease in earnings lead to a higher potential subsidy?

Perhaps the combination of 1 and 2 above will lead to a premium you'll be able to afford?
