  •  Because we read the Constitution not the Bible? (10+ / 0-)

"You can't hardly separate homosexuals from subversives."--Senator Kenneth Wherry, 1950.

      •  Indeed...they do not necessarily contradict... (4+ / 0-)

each other. It's just that Biblical interpretation has been so convoluted for so long, we tend to turn to one over the other.

If President Obama didn't intend to lead, he shouldn't have applied for the job.

        •  Oh,a great example of this (6+ / 0-)

That "love" that David felt for Johnathan that surpasseth that of women.

If I remember correctly, unlike the various words of Greek that mean different types of love, the ancient Hebrew has only one word for "love": ahav. I remember pointing this out to one of the high holy bigots over at huff post and followed up by saying we don't know what type of "love" that David had for Jonathan and/or Jonathan had for David. Therefore any interpretation of what that "love" was is just that: an interpretation according to ideology.

The covenant ceremony that they participated in where they exchanged clothing items?

Apparently that ceremony is part of the basis of the current 'traditional' wedding ceremony, including the bit where the bride and groom feed each other the first pieces of the wedding cake. (Not all parts of the ceremony are recorded in the David and Jonathan verses, but there's enough in other verses elsewhere about other covenant swearings to figure out what the elements of it likely were.)

Oh, and then on the basis of that covenant, David accepted Jonathan's orphaned and disabled son (who was the one person who had a claim to the throne that could have technically overriden David's if anyone had wanted to argue the legal point) into his court as if one of his own close kin.

I have that from an SBC Sunday School teacher I had in high school. We spent a whole Sunday morning on it, and she never had the epiphany moment of realizing just what she was saying about those two.

            •  And in highsight and rereading, (0+ / 0-)

I really should have said 'the two spouses' instead of 'bride and groom'.
