My forest used to be empty. I'd walk alone for hours, just watching and breathing. Oh the stories I could tell...

Now, the forest has been discovered. It's a rare day, usually pouring down rain and windy, when I can walk in the way I use to. Now I take an extra bag with me to pick up garbage; note the nurse logs that have been stripped of bark and moss; complain about the "Nature Awareness" kids' groups that tear out the ferns for headdresses and harvest the ever decreasing stands of bracken fern and make clearings in the name of "learning to live in the woods".

But there are some days, like today, when Eagle is courting and the light slants in sideways through the earliest Osoberry buds, and our native Squirrel scurries across the path and into the ferns, and the air is redolent with the fragrance of Mushroom and Douglas Fir and the souls of Salmon.

Today was one of those days.

May you continue to have those days.

Dear Father, hear and bless the beings of the sea and singing birds; and guard with tenderness small things that have no words. ~A child's prayer (ParkRanger)
