    because that's where this is going, and if we take the long road, people will do a lot more suffering.

    As I mentioned above, our worries about them repealing things like environmental laws and other progressive victories are funny, considering that the first thing they'll do is defund the federal government.

    Once the government is bankrupt, none of the rest matters.

    If they want to go, let them go.  We can carve out a chunk of red states and cut them loose.  Institute a federal program of job and house trades to get people to the right sides of the dividing line, and employ as many people as we can in a 10 year plan to make it all happen.

    In the end, we get a country without the lunatics, where the "center" is a reasonable place.  They get their anger, their stupidity, and the welfare states.

    We get a smaller nation that does not think it has to police the world.  They get an impotent raving mess that would like to do so, but can't.

    It's a win win.
