since Country has a very traditional history to try and build an audience in an ever changing country.

I look at artists like Big & Rich and Darius Rutker (sp) to look at maybe the next direction of Country music.

'cause Big & Rich, like Montgomery Gentry, ain't got it.

Alabama had it; Brooks and Dunn had it; Holly Dunn had it; Radney Foster's got it; both stutterin' Mel Tillis and his lovely daughter have it.

You need to not listen to the radio, which is mostly what Clear Channel wants you to hear, if you want to hear country. Where are our songwriters now? Where's the next Marty Robbins?

Merle Haggard collected a lifetime achievement award from The Kennedy Center. He's not even the greatest singer of his generation (arguably, among the survivors, that's either Kris or Willie). Haggard's a hell of a songwriter, though, and no two ways about it; maybe even a better writer than the original Hank Williams.

The current crop of "country singers" are all in the mold of Charlie Rich or Mickey Gilley ... you want somebody who feels the songs. Strait doesn't write, but damn if he doesn't know how to pick the songs that people want to hear. He's added "Ring of Fire" to some of his live shows (and the first time I heard it I nearly fell out, but he's damn good with it). I'd give a lot to hear him cut covers of some Marty Robbins songs. He's got the nighest thing to the voice to do it, I think.

We don't have the writers now that we used to -- from Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn to Merle Haggard and yes, even David Allan Coe.

Carrie Underwood? Please. Shania Twain? Retch.
