    Go Light on the Nighthawk ... C.W. McCall did some dark stuff in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

    "There Won't Be No Country Music" was one, but the big hit was probably "Roses for Mama."

    "Paper Rosie," for Gene Watson, was both a big hit and a very dark / sad song.

    The reason it's "Country" nowadays, and they leave off the "and Western" is so damn many of the "and Western" songs were about people who wound up dead,
    like Pancho and Lefty.
