    ....would be excellent emissaries for the direction country music should go in the decade itself.  There will still be room for the more mainstream commercial stuff as there always has been, but something meatier is definitely needed than what I hear played on a continual loop on radio.  Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson seem more capable than anyone else I can think of in contemporary country music of bringing that about.

    As a rule, I'm not opposed to the Hot New Country evolution of the early 90s.  In the beginning, I thought the experiment brought about some of the most interesting music Nashville has ever produced.  But by the late 90s, it was getting fat and lazy and far less interesting.  There have been highs and lows since, but definitely more lows and it just seems like the genre has been in a lateral, humdrum condition for about 15 years now.
