  •  We knew this was coming last year (18+ / 0-)

It isn't a question of if they're going to do it, it's a question of how much they're going to get out of it.  We'll be lucky if they don't scalp Social Security this time around. But don't forget - there will be a next time. And a next. And a next.

    •  That would be political suicide for Republicans. (5+ / 0-)

I'd LOVE to see the Republicans go after Medicare and Social Security. I'd love to see the Republicans force the gov't to default.

      •  One can only hope (15+ / 0-)

that we make them ACTUALLY go after it, rather than capitulating in advance. Recent history is not looking good though.

Or as John Cole put it:

If Lindsey Graham wants to go after social security, the Democrats should not do or say a thing until the Republican proposal is in bill form and the details are included. Let them be the party that wants to go after grandma’s income. Let’s see DeMint’s plan for the default of the United States.

Having watched Obama the last two years, I’m reasonably sure the brain trust in charge of the political operation will instead pretend the Republicans are serious and offer more than the Republicans as an opening bid, and then watch themselves get undercut but the douchebag Blue Dogs and flayed alive by the professional left. That’s just how they roll. Morans.

Fight until we win. Then we can begin arguing about the details. - Kwickkick (RIP) 2009

      •  I would too, as long as they do it alone. (3+ / 0-)

It's the spineless Democrats I worry about.

It's their new mantra. They're just not going after the SS of anybody who's now collecting it or will be collecting it in the next couple of election cycles.  I start collecting in 2014, so I should be pretty safe. It's my kid who won't have it when she's too old and tired to scrape together a living any more. But she is too young to vote, and we all know how interested in politics twentysomethings are. If they had any clue what the Refuglycans had in store for them, they'd be voting in droves.

who will be held responsible for cutting Medicare and Social Security.  You know, the one with the birth certificate.

      •  Bond Market will crash the economy before default (4+ / 0-)

If this starts getting serious, the bond markets will start jumping interest rates, just like they are now for the PIIGS.

This is Obama's ace, but he probably won't play it.  If he had one ounce of common sense he would hit the campaign trail and beat the shit out of the Republicans for the rise in interest rates.  If he had ONE ounce of political savvy, he could destroy the Republican party for what they are doing.

        I won't hold my breath.

and say the increase in interest rates is because of "unsustainable spending."

I don't see more than 1/3 of Republicans not voting to raise the debt ceiling -- the big $ will sit them down and explain this to them.  It's pretty cynical they'd even joke about this.  It's not unlike how Nixon would talk about nuking the North Vietnamese levees just to get reactions out of people. It's playing the part of crazy, but that doesn't work if the other side knows they're not going to do it.

          •  Of course the GOP will fight. (0+ / 0-)

They will gouge at your eyes, kick you in the groin, take your mother hostage... they will fight dirty and hard.  This is a fight for the very survival of our country and if we're going to back down everytime the GOP is going to fight, well we might as well go home and quit complaining.

I disagree that this is a bluff.  They know in the end, Obama will back down.  The only question is, how far will they push it, and will it get out of hand so the damage done by the interest rate increases can't be reversed.

Remember, the FED is already sitting on over a $trillion of MBS and just anounced QE2 for another 1/2 trillion.  A sudden rise in interest rates could cause problems for the FED and the treasury Dept. that could crush the entire worlds economy and make this depression look like a cake walk.

The Republican party is committed to honoring America's financial debt [We wouldn't want the rich holding much of it to suffer any].

            1. Maturing debt will be refunded as a highest government priority using existing tax revenue if needed.
            1. The President and all government employees are authorized to cut all spending in the following order as found or made known:

            a. That which is wasteful
            b. that which is pork
            c. that which enables sloth
            ....

            1. Prior to any disbursement not redeeming debt, an internal federal review of all categories under 2 shall made made in regard to that disbursement.
