    censorship.

I am suggesting that we ask, forcefully, that Etsy remove this bullshit from its catalog.

None of what you cited is offensive to my sensibilities, and neither is Serrano's "Piss Christ" (though I thought it was stupid). I would never suggest censoring any of it. I would suggest boycotting EA Games, if you don't like the violent video games they sell. We're talking commercial trade here, not art.

Not buying is a choice, even a statement. Denying someone the ability to sell their art is censorship.

Etsy has the choice to sell or not sell whatever it chooses. I'm saying that they should make the choice not to sell it. The jackass in question can sell his crap on his private Web site, and though I'll condemn and mock him, I won't ask that he take the site down. It's his site and his business. Same as if he sells it in a booth on the street, though I'd advise him to get ready for some outraged consumer to kick his ass. Etsy's a third-party vendor. It is not bound to sell or sell anything. Censorship doesn't come into it at all. What part of this don't you understand? Who the hell is advocating denying this guy the ability to sell his art?

someone was selling pro atheism cards on Etsy and a group of offended Christians thinks that Etsy should make the choice not to sell it.  You have said they have a right to boycott.  Of course everyone does.  My question is should they?  And how do you view your proposed boycott in contrast to theirs?

          I ask these questions seriously.

I don't see anyone here promoting legal action.

in order to remove something you find offensive...

but how is that different than those people a few years ago who were going to boycott Starbucks because one of the sayings they were going to rotate on the coffee cups was pro atheism?

That is why I don't like this.

      •  They have the right to boycott (4+ / 0-)

anyone they like. Bill O'Reilly boycotted France not too many years ago, cretin that he is. They might do it for stupid reasons, or reasons we don't ourselves approve of, but it's their call. You don't like it, go buy more Starbucks to offset their boycott.

This is not restriction of art. No one's taking this guy's pencils away from him or insisting that he draw pretty ducks and bunnies, or whatever else someone may find "correct." I'm saying that Etsy is selling a product for profit. The product they're selling celebrates hatred, misogyny, victimization, and brutalization. Etsy is under no obligation to sell it, and in my opinion, they shouldn't. The guy wants to sell it, he can sell it himself.
