  •  Yeah (5+ / 0-)

The issue is politics. Guantanamo Detainees don't have families, communities and supporters in the US in sufficient numbers to garner political support.

And if we do close Guantanamo, the SHARIA IS COMIN' TA GET YA assholes will freak out.

Politically, there's nothing to gain, and everything to lose.

Nevermind the fact that it's the right thing to do.

By it's the right thing to do, I meant "Closing Guantanamo is the right thing to do."

    •  And that is the REAL problem ... (3+ / 0-)

That too many adult Americans, including it appears the President, view the prisoners as "other", instead of real live human beings.

Torture is ALWAYS wrong, no matter who is doing it to whom.

    •  By doing nothing you empower the assholes (0+ / 0-)

"And if we do close Guantanamo, the SHARIA IS COMIN' TA GET YA assholes will freak out."

Let them. Are you afraid of them? I'm not.

"Politically, there's nothing to gain, and everything to lose."

Actually, if you make a compelling case using core American principles (like habeua corpus and due process), there is a lot to gain. Your statement reflects the belief that they are stronger than we are. They are stronger only if you let them.

Unfortunately, self-capitulation has become endemic to our party. Dems buy into the bullshit "War on Terror" rhetoric that supports the rationale that is driving this issue. Until we reject the terms the opposition hands to us, we won't ever level the playing field.
