    a very complex person.

Yes, indeed!  And self-aware, and evolving and seeing and sharing and yet needing quiet and solitude.

How lucky for your friend to have known him and for you to have heard stories!!!

I guess my biggest gripe with Rosemary Ruether was that she did not understand the work he was doing because it was not the work she was doing...sigh.

I do not think she listened with an open heart...just me.

I don't believe she had read much of his work, either.

spend a summer at a retreat at an monastery- not Gethsemane, though they do offer some retreats.  That experience really helped me to understand why someone might choose a life of contemplation.

I haven't read the Rosemary Ruether book.  Mr. Hill did- and he had much the same reaction as you.  He thought she was trying to overlay her agenda with what Merton was doing, like she was talking over the top of him.

The Cloister Walk by Kathleen Norris and I thought how wonderful it would be to have a chance to sit and think and write. :)

I never could have left my kids for more than a weekend, though.

But I can imagine how wonderful it would still be.

I am glad you got to do it.

I am lucky to have beauty around me where I live.

I couldn't have left them very long, either.

Though raising children is a whole other kind of mystical experience involving a lot of prayer....;)
