  •  I think some people mistakenly believe (12+ / 0-)

"ignore them and they'll go away."  Or "don't give them attention, that's what they want."

In Billing's, MT, A white supremacist group was committing Neo-Nazi graffiti, putting anti-Jewish pamphlets on cars, etc.  And while there was a community response, the conventional wisdom was, "Ignore them."

And then they threw a brick through a five-year-old's window that had a menorah in it.

I heard one of the from the city ministers speak about this.  He wanted to ask people to put up menorahs in their windows.  There was pushback.  People resisted, or were afraid.  But the local paper printed up full-page paper menorahs... for free... for people to hang in their windows.  The more vandalism occurred, the more people did it.  10,000 people hung up those menorahs in the end.

The part that gets me is the story of the mother driving her little girl around town to see all the menorahs.  Elated, the little girl turns to her mother and says, "I didn't know there were so many Jewish people in Billings!"  "No, honey," the mother replies.  "Those are our friends."
