    Another issue - never popular, is the pay you get for Congress.  The typical candidate is probably economically more successful than most.  Someone making 250K a year isn't going to run - they can't afford to not work and even if they win they couldn't afford the pay cut.

    You have to be really rich to run.  Or in a two income family.  This latter model explains why people like Patty Murray are able to run.

      the reason why there are no unemployed truck drivers or minimum-wage McDonalds workers in the legislatures. While our "democracy" in theory "represents" all of us, the sad reality is that only the wealthy are (and can be) represented. The very idea that legislatural bodies "represent" us "little people", is ludicrous.

      Our "democracy" is mere aristocracy.
