The erstwhile ruling elite perceives government by the people and thus the representatives of the the public to be enemy number one.  To that end they've constructed the politics of personal destruction and its partner, the politics of personal adulation.  By putting the public focus on individual people, they not only distract the public from the fact that the people's will is being perverted, but transfer the blame to these iconic persons.

What's really ironic is that both the politics of personal destruction and of personal adulation are designed the reduce, if not eliminate entirely, the rights of the natural person.  Human rights are swamped by a sea of deprivation (of speech, of mobility, of association, of bodily integrity and of personal security) almost without being noticed because the term has been perverted to describe a political faction that isn't -- isn't political (of the polis), isn't a faction (just a random cabal, and definitely does not promote human rights.

The conservative mind relies mainly on what is plain to see.
