    are just prisons with psych care. Of a sort. Here in the South, at least, there's a history of abuse and neglect of patients/inmates.

    And it bears repeating that the sentence is life.  Technically, it's indeterminate and subject to review. But insanity defenses are rarely even attempted except in the most horrific cases. In practice, defendants found not guilty by reason of insanity are not released.
