is self-serving and hypocritical in the extreme.

    And I fully support it.

Look, all we know so far about Tucson is that an individual who never should have qualified to purchase a handgun was able to do so.

An enforced law which prohibited possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of an elected federal official could, at the very least, possibly intercept the next Loughner. That individual would be more easily identified if he/she was the only one packing heat at a political event. And, if the penalty for violating that law was prohibition from ever being able to purchase a firearm in the future, we will have taken one small step toward reducing the likelihood of assassination.

Will such a law stop an unstable individual from buying a weapon private party or stealing one? No. Does that mean we shouldn't pass such a law? I think not. I don't have the data, but I'd wager that the majority of attempted assassinations were committed by people who legally purchased their weapons.

Democrats are too fearful to initiate handgun regulation, for good reason. With Peter King sponsoring it, however, there's a golden opportunity to open the door to sensible, incremental laws that begin to address the most dangerous holes in our current regulations.

I would support it as well.

And, as you also note, the hypocrisy and self-serving nature of it galls me.
