...just to add to the speculation...but it gives some justification for the Sharpton involvement...

[snip]  Next, Mr. Stone actually became the campaign manager for Democrat Al Sharpton, probably at the request of Karl Rove. This was a blatant attempt to conflate Sharpton with the word "Democrat" and sink the ticket by a more impressive and funded Sharpton campaign.

This was right at the time that it was rumored that Sharpton was going to drop out and endorse Gen. Clark.  This would have given Clark quite a boost in the South Carolina primary and perhaps swayed the momentum away from Kerry.  I would argue (as many have) that Clark was the administration's biggest fear and they had to take him out before he made it to the general election.

2004 from an entirely new perspective!

Clark was/ still is the most effective person out there when it comes to explaining in simple language the collosal failures of Bush's foreign policy around the world. I think you're correct in saying that Clark was the biggest threat to Bush as far as substance and credentials. Dean had the same type of message, but didn't have the foreign policy experience to back it up.

As a politician, however, Clark was in waaay over his head against Bush/ Rove/ Cheney. There's no way he could compete with those creeps who have spent their entire lives lying their way into political office and holding onto that power once they get it... It takes lots of practice to be that crooked.
