Think of the servicemember who jumps on a hand-grenade or someone who gives his/her life for someone s/he loves.  It's an act of sacrifice.  In many cases with "real" terrorists versus the mentally ill, the ideal, the sense of camaraderie with others involved in the struggle (whatever it is), the love that they have for their cause is what motivates them.

I think that it is too easy, if not intellectually lazy, to label all terrorists--suicide bombers or not--as mentally ill.  If we do so, we can just say "well, they're crazy, therefore WE don't have to rethink what we do...we don't have to ask why they do what they do...they're just crazy..."

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. Rogers Hornsby
