      Obama called this one when he was still a Senator voting against Roberts's confirmation. He said (you could google it) that Roberts consistently upheld the power of the government against the individual.

      And what's going on here is that D.C made a governmental decision (to ban discrimination), and Jackson wanted to challenge it (by citizen initiative). The Roberts court just said, "no, citizen, we're not going to let you challenge the government."

      Reminds me of Roger Nash Baldwin, founder of the ACLU. Worked hard early in his career to make the initiative and referendum part of the Missouri constitution. Then the first thing the good citizens of Missouri did with it was to enact a set of Jim Crow laws. Baldwin gave up on the people and turned to the courts.
