    ...that means a version of the male gene that produces a defective, or less active, enzyme responsible for converting yellow pigments into red.

    Are any of the other male cardinals in your neighborhood pale to this degree?

    If not, this individual would seem to be a homozygous recessive, meaning, he has two "bad" copies of the gene in question.

    Since his female mate is likely to contribute a wild type active version of the gene, all their offspring will have normal color intensity. One copy from the female is enough to do the job regardless of whether a less active male version is inherited.
