    •  It's a perfectly lovely (10+ / 0-)

~26 acres (more or less) on a southern Appalachian mountain we love a lot, thanks. Surrounded by National Forest and state game lands, a little over half a million acres' worth. Have only had to tangle with one timber rattler in our 18 years here, but they are out there, big enough to swallow groundhogs whole. Best to make noise so they'll vacate a trail, or flip 'em off with a walking stick. But if they stand their ground it's good to be armed.

Main problem are copperheads. They think they own the place, breed like rabbits, are extremely aggressive and will come right into the house if you let 'em. We've been fairly successful keeping their population down (including a big black snake named Marvin who lives under the front porch and eats copperheads for snacks), no one who lives here has ever been bitten. A couple of visiting city-slickers have been (they simply don't know what "watch where you step, look out for snakes" means). So we require a machete-weilder to accompany the city-slickers on the trails and fairways during warm months.

But to be honest, I don't mind at all if you avoid the place. It's invitation only here.

Now, more than ever, we need the Jedi.
