I live in an area where the crime rate is not 0%.

What drives me to carry a handgun?

The same thing that drives me to wear a seatbelt. Or a helmet. Or a condom before I was monogamous/snipped. Shit happens. It's better to have and not need than need and not have. It's not a matter of fear. It's a matter of recognizing that bad things happen to people.

Do you know what the statistics are for the number of people killed in this country with firearms? Even if we include suicides, you're looking at ~30,000 a year. Compared to the millions of firearms and millions of firearm owners, that's a small %. Less than 1/2 a % point actually.

I am for reasonable gun control. This would take a diary in and of itself.

My right to keep and bear arms doesn't impact your right to life. If it did, I would be brought up on charges and punished for it. It wouldn't matter if I wounded you or brandished the firearm at you or killed you (not a threat. It is just an example.) I would be punished. Which is how it should be. Until I actually break the law, I should be free to exercise my rights.

I will agree that no right is absolute.
