      •  Dude, (0+ / 0-)

I am not the only one saying this. In fact, one of this site's heroes, Jon Stewart made this exact point the other day.

Her rhetoric is awful. The Giffords story is awful. There is no question. But one did not directly cause the other.

I call these diaries "runaway train" diaries because people just start saying "Yeah! and YEAH!" without thinking.

I call these diaries "runaway train" diaries because people just start saying "Yeah! and YEAH!" without thinking.

Palin uses very violent rhetoric against her 'enemies' (who happen to be her fellow Americans) and puts crosshairs on those 'enemies' to 'take them out', and then one of the referenced 'enemies' gets shot in the face at point blank distance and six people are 'taken out' because they attend a 'Congress on a Corner' meeting, and all of a sudden Palin's an innocent who claims zero responsibility for the shooting because she certainly didn't 'cause' it.
With all due respect to Jon Stewart, I'm just a little tired of Palin's total disregard for accountability.  No, she didn't pull the trigger and no, she didn't buy the bullets, but ALL public figures have to take into account there are very disturbed people out here who will LITERALLY take - the violent rhetoric and - 'crosshairs on a map' and - the 'take them out' comments, and run with them, resulting in disaster.
AND that accountability IS Palin's responsibility.
So, yes, I say Yeah! and YEAH!, and I AM thinking.

prove that one did not directly cause the other.  if you want to deride the "she caused it" notion, do it real.  but don't pretend that you know with any certainty what the relationship between sarah et al's rhetoric and the tucson shooting was/wasn't.  saying it didn't cause it is as specious a claim as saying it did; it's unprovable either way.  but there's a lot more behind the "violent rhetoric didn't help" philosophy than the "no relationship" one.

and they'll tell you that people like Loughner don't just go off in a vacuum.

if the guy gets on the stand and says that he shot everybody because Palin told him to? Or Beck told him to? Or Limbaugh? Or all of them?

They DID say to 'take them out' and to 'remove them from office' and 'water the tree of liberty' - and it's on video, audio, and in print. They can't deny they said those things.

          What then?

Because if I was his lawyer I'd tell him to say EXACTLY that.
