Besides, the issue here is China, which does NOT have comparable environmental or labor standards.  By moving manufacturing overseas, we and Europe have outsourced our environmental problems to China.

      •  but if jobs are created elsewhere (0+ / 0-)

then the those people would have more ability to buy American goods, creating jobs here. There are problems with dealing with countries that have lower wages and environmental and labor standards and less political freedom. But I don't see how buying only American goods helps things

If they are overseas, they might buy more goods from us, or they might buy more goods from Indonesia.  That's the first reason.

The second reason is that building the factory here creates jobs, staffing the factory here creates jobs, transporting goods to the factory here creates jobs--all here.  All those jobs are elsewhere if you build the goods elsewhere.  And dollars spent on wages for jobs here get spent here, creating more jobs supplying the laborers.  You lose this multiplier effect if you build elsewhere.

          •  Of course the same is true for (0+ / 0-)

people here about buying from Indonesia. If we have a global recession, than there isn't enough work in a lot of places, which makes things difficult. I think the ideal would be to have more widespread employment globally. I don't know if protecting jobs here if there is high unemployment elsewhere would be sustainable.
